Fiddler on the Roof: Costumes & Contrasts,
An Exploration of Tradition & Identity
Arkady Tzykun
Vita Tzykun
The Breman Museum is proud to partner with the Atlanta Opera and the Alliance Theatre to present a unique exhibition in conjunction with the Alliance’s new production of Fiddler on the Roof, showcasing the creative talents of acclaimed costume designer Vita Tzykun and her father, celebrated Israeli artist Arkady Tzykun. Through Vita’s expressive and detailed costume designs, she captures the dignity, individuality, and vibrant traditions of the Jewish shtetl, honoring its resilience and humanity, while her collaboration with Arkady blends her visionary concepts with his masterful illustration to create works rich in narrative and artistry. Their father–daughter partnership reflects their shared heritage and celebrates the generational transmission of craft, memory, and imagination. Arkady’s evocative pencil drawings complement this perspective by highlighting the beauty and diversity of the Jewish people, while revealing how subtle artistic changes can transform a face—showing how art can both reflect humanity and, when distorted, perpetuate harmful stereotypes. Together, their works invite visitors to explore identity, tradition, and cultural memory, and to reflect on the power of art to shape perception, challenge prejudice, and celebrate our shared humanity.
The exhibition features over 50 collaborative costume illustrations created by Vita and Arkady for the Alliance–Atlanta Opera co-production, striking sculptural figures of Tevye and a towering 8-foot-tall Grandma Tzeitel, and Arkady’s portraits with corresponding caricatures. Together, their works reflect Jewish heritage, challenge stereotypes, and celebrate the power of art to shape cultural memory.
